The Arizona Diamondbacks made a tough call this week, designating outfielder Alek Thomas for assignment—a decision that was as strategic as it was emotional. General Manager Mike Hazen recently opened up about why the club chose this path, shedding light on the thinking behind a move that stunned the fan base.
Thomas, a former top prospect who debuted with the Snakes in 2022 after being drafted in 2018, has long been a homegrown favorite. His journey through the system made him one of the organization's most recognizable players—a potential cornerstone who could anchor the outfield for years. But on the field, consistency has been elusive. This season, Thomas posted a .181 batting average with a .563 OPS, struggling to keep his offense on par with his standout defense. While flashes of promise have surfaced throughout his MLB career, he hasn't been able to lock down an everyday role.
Rather than sending Thomas back to Triple-A with one option remaining on his contract, the Diamondbacks opted to designate him for assignment. This exposes him to waivers, giving other clubs a chance to claim him. Hazen explained that the process creates accountability and clarity for both the player and the organization.
“If I option you and you've gotten no exposure to 29 other teams, you can say that the Diamondbacks are holding me in Triple-A, but some other team would take me,” Hazen told PHNX Diamondbacks. “That argument gets taken off the table if he gets through waivers.”
The general manager also confirmed that the team has already received calls expressing interest in Thomas. He now has seven days to clear waivers if he's to remain in Arizona's organization. For a player who once seemed poised to be a fixture in the desert, this moment marks a pivotal crossroads—both for Thomas and for a Diamondbacks club that's clearly thinking long-term about its roster construction.
