Current Memphis Grizzlies Player Dies At Age 29

The Memphis Grizzlies organization and its fans are mourning a devastating loss this week. Brandon Clarke, the team's beloved forward, has passed away at just 29 years old. The news was confirmed by his agency, Priority Sports, which announced that Clarke died on May 11, 2026. His cause of death has not yet been made public.

This tragedy comes during an already challenging season for the Grizzlies. After a promising 48-win campaign last year that brought the team back to the playoffs, Memphis struggled mightily in head coach Tuomas Lisalo's first full season, finishing with just 25 wins. But now, the basketball community is reminded that some losses far outweigh anything that happens on the court.

Clarke was a first-round pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, selected 21st overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, his draft rights were immediately traded to Memphis in exchange for Darius Bazley and a future second-round pick—a move that would define his entire professional career. Clarke spent all seven seasons with the Grizzlies, appearing in 309 games and making 50 starts.

Known for his energetic play and high-flying dunks, Clarke averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game over his career, playing about 20.8 minutes per contest. The Vancouver, British Columbia native was a fan favorite at FedExForum, celebrated for his hustle and team-first mentality.

Injuries had unfortunately become a recurring theme in recent years. Clarke's 2025-26 season ended after just two games due to a calf injury sustained on December 20. Similarly, he played only six games in the 2023-24 season before being sidelined. Despite these setbacks, Clarke remained a respected leader in the locker room and a positive presence in the Memphis community.

As the Grizzlies family processes this heartbreaking news, the sports world joins them in remembering a player who gave everything to the game and the city he called home for seven years.
