If you followed golf in 2023, you remember the moment. A 46-year-old club pro from Southern California named Michael Block—affectionately known as "Blockie"—stepped onto the biggest stage and became an overnight sensation. Now, at the 108th PGA Championship at Aronimink, he's back to doing what he does best: being authentically, unapologetically himself.
Block burst into the spotlight at Oak Hill two years ago, and it all started with a single, unforgettable line. Wired for sound during the first round, he described the notoriously tough course as what might happen if Oakmont and Shinnecock had "a baby." The internet loved it. But Block wasn't done. Three days later, paired with Rory McIlroy in the final round, he holed out for an ace on the 15th hole and followed it with a jaw-dropping up-and-down on the 72nd to finish 15th. The Blockie Express had officially left the station.
Since that breakout week, Block has played in two more PGA Championships (this week marks his third), teed it up in eight other PGA Tour events, and racked up more corporate appearances than Shaq. His fame has spawned memes, merchandise, and partnerships with TaylorMade, Malbon Golf, Cisco, Charles Schwab, and Raising Cane's. Not bad for a guy whose day job is fixing slices on the range at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California.
This year, Block had to earn his spot the old-fashioned way. At the PGA Professional Championship in Bandon Dunes, Oregon, he opened with rounds of 71 and 70 before 30-mph winds turned the final two days into a survival test. His closing 78-69 was enough for a tie for 10th place and a golden ticket to his eighth PGA Championship.
Now, in Philadelphia, Block arrived early and walked Aronimink's back nine ahead of the tournament. The stage is set for another chapter in the Blockie legend—and if history is any guide, we're in for a show.
