The Chicago Cubs are on an absolute tear, and history is taking notice. With a dominant 7-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday, the Cubs improved to an MLB-best 27-12 record—the best winning percentage in the league. But the win was more than just another notch in the standings; it marked their 10th consecutive victory, making it the second time this season the Cubs have achieved a double-digit winning streak.
This is a feat not seen from the franchise since 1935, when the Cubs won 100 games and marched to the World Series. "That means you're doing something that's pretty rare, and I think we realize that," manager Craig Counsell said after the game. The last MLB team to pull off two such streaks in the first 39 days of a season was the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, who went on to win the World Series.
The Cubs' first 10-game streak ran from April 14 to April 24, ending with a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. After a brief three-game skid, they kicked off this current run on April 28 by taking the final two games against the San Diego Padres. Since then, they haven't looked back.
Friday's game was a showcase of depth and talent. Ian Happ extended his on-base streak to 29 games, while Michael Busch went 3-for-3 with a three-run double. On the mound, Ben Brown, Ryan Rolison, Javier Assad, and Ethan Roberts combined to allow just one earned run and two hits over nine innings.
No Cubs team has posted more than two 10-game winning streaks in a season since 1906, when the squad finished with four. "Baseball is a game of a ridiculous amount of stats and things to look up," said second baseman Nico Hoerner. "Anytime you have to go that far back, it is obviously a good sign, especially on a positive like that. We're just going to keep it rolling."
For Cubs fans, this is a season to savor—and the perfect time to gear up in your favorite Cubs apparel as the team chases history.
