For the third consecutive night at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs delivered a gut-wrenching walk-off win against the Cincinnati Reds, extending the Reds' losing streak to six games. This time, it was a 10th-inning thriller that saw the Reds squander a two-run lead in the ninth before falling 7-6.
The Reds entered the ninth inning trailing by two runs but mounted a spirited rally, scoring four times to take a 6-4 lead. It looked like Cincinnati had finally turned the tables on the Cubs after a series of close losses. However, the lead vanished quickly in the bottom of the ninth when rookie Pete Crow-Armstrong crushed a two-run homer to right field, tying the game and sending it to extras.
In the 10th, Reds left-hander Brock Burke struggled with his command, walking Cubs slugger Michael Busch with the bases loaded to force in the winning run. The loss was especially painful for Cincinnati, as it came on the same day closer Emilio Pagán was placed on the injured list with a hamstring issue.
This marks the Reds' sixth straight defeat overall and drops them four games behind the Cubs in the National League Central. What's more concerning is their record within the division: they've lost all three NL Central series so far, including eight straight games to the Pirates and Cubs combined. Four of those losses have been by a single run, highlighting a pattern of late-game struggles.
Despite spending most of April in first place and posting a 19-9 record against non-division opponents, the Reds now find themselves in an early-season hole. With the Cardinals and Brewers still on the horizon, Cincinnati will need to find a way to reverse its fortunes quickly—or risk watching the division race slip away before summer even arrives.
