The Iowa Cubs delivered a commanding performance Monday afternoon, sinking the Columbus Clippers 13-6 in a game that showcased both power and depth at the plate.
Left-hander Jordan Wicks navigated through some early command issues to keep Columbus off the board for four innings. Despite walking four batters and allowing two hits, Wicks struck out four and managed to escape unscathed each time. Since he didn't complete five innings, Zac Leigh earned the win in relief, surrendering just one run on one hit over 1.2 innings while fanning three.
The real story was Iowa's relentless offense, which pounded out 17 hits with every starter contributing at least one. Designated hitter BJ Murray sparked the attack in the third inning with a solo home run—his sixth of the season—finishing 2-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, and a walk.
Right fielder Kevin Alcántara continued his torrid pace, crushing his league-leading 13th home run in the fifth inning, a 417-foot solo shot. Alcántara went 1-for-4 with two walks and crossed the plate three times.
First baseman Jonathon Long had a banner day, going 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. Second baseman James Triantos drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 day that included a sacrifice fly and an RBI double, scoring twice himself. Left fielder Owen Miller added a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI triple and a walk, finishing with two RBIs and a run. Ben Cowles chipped in going 2-for-2 with a double and a run, while shortstop Scott Kingery made several sparkling defensive plays to go with a 1-for-2 day at the plate.
In other Cubs minor league action, the Tennessee Smokies edged the Birmingham Barons 4-3. Starter Tyler Schlaffer was outstanding, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit, striking out seven, and walking only one. Reliever Jackson Kirkpatrick ran into trouble in the sixth, surrendering three runs and the lead, but the Smokies' bats provided just enough support to secure the win.
Meanwhile, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans had an unusual day with their game being canceled, leaving fans and players alike with a rare off day in the schedule.
From dominant pitching to explosive offense, it was a day to remember across the Cubs' farm system—one that has fans excited about the talent making its way through the pipeline.
