Craig Breslow isn't waiting for the calendar to turn. With the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline still months away, the Boston Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer is already mapping out an aggressive strategy—one that signals a clear shift from rebuilding to contending.
Speaking with WEEI on Thursday, Breslow made it plain: the Red Sox expect to be buyers, not sellers, when July rolls around. "Our hope and our expectation is over the next two and a half months that we have leading up to the deadline, we're gonna play quality, consistent baseball that's gonna end up with us winning a bunch of games," Breslow said. "We're gonna be in a position to make moves that improve our outlook in '26. That was the expectation all offseason. That's what we talked about all spring."
This isn't just offseason optimism. Breslow connected those high expectations to the team's surprising decision to part ways with manager Alex Cora and much of the coaching staff two weeks ago—a move that raised eyebrows across the league. "In terms of prioritizing 2026, a huge piece of the decision to make the changes that we did at the time that we did was because we believe that we have a really good team that's capable of a deep run in '26," Breslow explained. "That hasn't changed at all. We're constantly looking at ways to improve our roster. If there is something as we approach the deadline that makes sense, we're absolutely gonna be aggressive in pursuing it."
For Red Sox fans, the message is clear: this front office is done waiting. Breslow's first two trade deadlines in Boston have been mixed at best—most notably last year's underwhelming swap for Dustin May after failing to land Joe Ryan. But with a roster that's shown flashes of real promise early this season, the pressure is on to deliver when it counts.
Whether that means adding a frontline starter, a middle-of-the-order bat, or bullpen reinforcements, Breslow is signaling that the checkbook is open. For a team that's been building toward this moment, the 2026 deadline could define not just the season, but the direction of the franchise for years to come.
