The issue, however, has never been about talent. Blue's ability to generate big plays both on the ground and as a receiver is undeniable. The question marks revolve around the less glamorous parts of the game: pass protection, ball security, and the day-to-day discipline required to succeed at the professional level. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer emphasized repeatedly that Blue needed to be more consistent in practice to earn a game-day jersey, and the coach's no-nonsense approach to missed curfews, meetings, and inconsistent effort was evident throughout the season.

Last year, the Cowboys had veteran Miles Sanders as a trustworthy backup to Williams. But heading into training camp for the 2026 season, the RB2 job is wide open—and Blue's skill set is a perfect complement to Williams. His ability to impact the game as both a runner and receiver could provide a much-needed spark to a Cowboys offense that craves more explosive gains from the ground game.

Here's the good news for Blue: the window for increased playing time in Year 2 is wide open. The Cowboys didn't sign a veteran running back in free agency, nor did they spend a draft pick on the position in the 2026 NFL Draft. Whether that's a vote of confidence in Blue's readiness or simply a belief that the current combination of backs can get the job done, one thing is clear—the opportunity is there for the taking.
