Dallas Cowboys safety Jalen Thompson announces his jersey number on instagram after signing with the Dallas Cowboys on a three-year $36 million deal

The Dallas Cowboys' offseason jersey carousel is spinning once again. Just a day after defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku announced a number switch, the team's most significant free-agent signing has revealed his digits for the upcoming season.

New safety Jalen Thompson, who joined the Cowboys on a hefty three-year, $36 million deal, took to Instagram to announce he'll be wearing number 34 in Dallas. This maintains a personal tradition, as Thompson sported the same number throughout his seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and during his college career at Washington State.

Thompson's arrival is a major move for a Cowboys secondary that struggled last season, and his jersey choice has a ripple effect. The number 34 was worn last year by rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr., meaning Revel will need a new number for his sophomore campaign.

For many Cowboys traditionalists, this change is a welcome sight. While the legendary Cornell Green—a five-time Pro Bowler who wore #34—did play some safety, the optics of a modern cornerback in that number never quite felt right. The shift allows the number to return to a player in the defensive backfield, fitting its historical use.

This opens up an opportunity for Revel Jr. to potentially join the NFL's growing trend of defensive backs sporting single-digit numbers. If he's looking to make that switch, his options on the current Cowboys roster are limited to the available numbers 1 and 2, recently vacated by Jalen Tolbert and Juanyeh Thomas, respectively.

As training camp approaches, more jersey number announcements are sure to follow. For now, Jalen Thompson has stamped his identity on the Cowboys' defense, both on the roster sheet and on the back of his new jersey.
