In a recent development that had Cowboys fans holding their breath, Dallas and star wide receiver George Pickens have moved past what insiders are calling a "trade scare" surrounding his franchise tag situation.
Pickens officially signed his franchise tag with the Cowboys last month, locking in a guaranteed $27 million for the 2026 season. But the road to that signature wasn't without its bumps. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Pickens' agent, David Mulugheta, spent draft weekend quietly exploring the wide receiver's market value across the league.
Analysts Shan Shariff and Bobby Belt broke down the situation on "105.3 The Fan," explaining that while Pickens wants a long-term deal, the franchise tag provides immediate financial security. "He really does like Dallas," they noted, adding that he's been working with quarterback Dak Prescott this offseason and is expecting another big year. "It sounds like he's going to have to do one more year to get that big payday down the road."
The situation echoes Prescott's own journey in 2020, when he played under the franchise tag before securing a massive extension. For Pickens, the Cowboys have until July 15 to reach a multi-year agreement. If no deal is reached, he'll play the upcoming season under the one-year tag, with a potential 2027 franchise tag costing Dallas $32.76 million.
Coming off a magnificent 2025 campaign with 93 catches, 1,429 receiving yards, and 9 touchdowns, Pickens has proven he's worth every penny. For now, the Cowboys' leadership has held firm, and Pickens is focused on what he does best: making plays on the field.
