Grading Brian Schottenheimer's first year as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach is a complex task. The team's overall 7-9-1 record and playoff absence tell one story, but the performance of his offensive unit tells a dramatically different, and far more promising, one.

While the season was ultimately underwhelming, Schottenheimer's offense emerged as a legitimate powerhouse. Quarterback Dak Prescott earned his fourth Pro Bowl nod after a stellar campaign, throwing for 4,552 yards and 30 touchdowns. The ground game was equally potent, with Javonte Williams rushing for 1,201 yards and 11 scores. The receiving duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens proved nearly unstoppable, combining for over 2,500 yards through the air.

However, this offensive brilliance was completely undermined by a defensive unit that ranked among the league's worst. The constant pressure to outscore opponents in shootouts highlighted a glaring imbalance that doomed the season.

As the Cowboys pivot to 2026, the focus has sharply shifted to fixing that defense. The hiring of new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and the possession of two first-round draft picks have ignited hope for a rapid turnaround. This sentiment is echoed by franchise icon Emmitt Smith, who offered a glowing review of Schottenheimer's offensive work.

"I was very impressed with what we did offensively," Smith stated. "I saw the balance he was trying to establish... Dak had one of his best years. Offensively, I thought the Cowboys showed signs of having a top-five offense." Smith was equally direct about the other side of the ball, emphasizing the critical need for defensive personnel upgrades.

The foundation is clearly set. With a high-octane offense already in place, the Cowboys' path back to contention now depends entirely on the defense catching up. The moves made this offseason will determine if this team can transform from exciting to elite.
