If you rushed to grab a Caleb Downs No. 18 jersey after the Cowboys announced rookie numbers last week, you might want to check your receipt.
Dallas' first-round pick and former Ohio State safety has already swapped digits after just one weekend of rookie minicamp. According to Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com, Downs will now wear No. 13—a few steps closer to his preferred No. 2, which he wore in college and high school.
The number switch came at the perfect time. No. 13 was most recently worn by edge rusher Dante Fowler, who signed with Seattle earlier this week, freeing up the jersey. It's a number with some history in Dallas, previously donned by DeMarvion Overshown, Michael Gallup, and T.Y. Hilton.
But the change creates a ripple effect in the equipment room. Backup quarterback Sam Howell, initially slated for No. 13, will now move to No. 16. And undrafted free agent wide receiver Jordan Hudson shifts from No. 16 to the newly vacated No. 18.
And here's the kicker: it might not be the final change. Downs has made no secret of his desire to wear No. 2—the number he rocked at Ohio State and throughout high school. But that digit currently belongs to offseason addition Cobie Durant.
"We're gonna see what happens," Downs said when asked about negotiating for No. 2. "That's the only thing I'm going to say about that."
For now, fans might want to hold off on that No. 13 jersey purchase. With training camp still ahead, the Cowboys' rookie could be making another switch before the season kicks off.
