Cowboys 2026 roster rundown: S Alijah Clark

The Cowboys have so much safety depth.

The Dallas Cowboys have built a safety room so deep it could rival the Mariana Trench—and that's both good news and bad news for Alijah Clark as he looks to secure his spot on the 2026 roster.

Football is a brutal business. One moment, you're making one of the most memorable plays of the season; the next, you're fighting just to keep your locker. That's the reality for Clark, an undrafted free agent from last year who hopes to defy the odds once again.

Clark turned heads during training camp with his versatility, showing promise at both safety and nickel corner. Despite a strong case for a roster spot, he was waived at final cuts and landed on the practice squad. A month later, he was promoted to the active roster and appeared in 11 games, even earning a start during an injury-plagued Week 8 matchup in Denver. Outside of that start, nearly all of Clark's snaps came on special teams.

And it was on special teams where Clark etched his name into Cowboys lore. During a thrilling comeback win over the Eagles, Clark lined up as a gunner on punt coverage. He was initially overpowered by the Philadelphia blocker, stumbling and even hitting the turf. But instead of giving up, Clark scrambled back to his feet, chased down the play, and delivered a bone-jarring hit on Eagles wide receiver Xavier Gipson, forcing a fumble that the Cowboys recovered. The play earned national praise and quickly became a fan favorite highlight, showcasing the kind of relentless hustle that coaches adore.

Now, Clark returns as a roster bubble candidate with one year left on his minimum contract. If he makes the team this season, he'll become an exclusive rights free agent in 2027 with just two accrued seasons, giving Dallas contractual control for at least another year—a small but significant advantage.

However, the path to a roster spot just got a whole lot tougher. The Cowboys overhauled their safety room this offseason, parting ways with Donovan Wilson and Juanyeh Thomas. But their replacements aren't exactly unknowns: Dallas signed veterans Jalen Thompson and P.J. Locke, then used the 11th overall pick on electrifying prospect Caleb Downs. With Malik Hooker and Markquese Bell still in the mix, the numbers game looks daunting for Clark.

But if his unforgettable hustle play against the Eagles taught us anything, it's that Alijah Clark doesn't go down without a fight.
