Cowboys 2026 roster rundown: EDGE Sam Williams

The Cowboys have an interesting point of depth at edge rusher.

When the Dallas Cowboys used a second-round pick on Sam Williams back in 2022, they envisioned him as the perfect complement to Micah Parsons. Four years later, that vision has yet to fully materialize—but 2026 offers one last shot at redemption.

Williams enters what looks like a true "prove it" season. After a rollercoaster tenure filled with flashes of brilliance, frustrating penalties, and off-field incidents, the 26-year-old edge rusher finds himself on the roster for a fifth year many didn't see coming. The question now: can he finally deliver on that original promise?

The path here wasn't smooth.

Williams' first two seasons showed exactly why Dallas took him in the first place. He racked up 4 sacks as a rookie and 4.5 more in 2023, rotating in behind veterans DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, and Dante Fowler. The pass-rush juice was undeniable. But so were the red flags. Multiple roughing penalties negated big plays, and three driving-related incidents—including an August 2023 arrest for marijuana possession and an unlawful weapon—raised serious concerns about maturity.

2024 was supposed to be the turning point.

When Armstrong and Fowler followed Dan Quinn to Washington, the rotation suddenly had room for Williams to step up. The third-year leap many hoped for was within reach. Then, on the fourth day of training camp, a torn ACL wiped out his entire season before it even started.

Last year brought mixed results.

Williams returned from injury to play all 17 games and even start five, but the production never matched the potential. He managed just one sack in Matt Eberflus' defensive scheme, and his snap count dwindled as the season wore on. However, he found a new way to contribute: special teams. A blocked punt and a blocked field goal in separate games showed a player still willing to do the dirty work.

Now, with a revamped Cowboys defense and a fresh start, Williams has one more chance to prove he's more than just potential. For a team that's always looking for edge depth, a healthy, focused Sam Williams could be the difference-maker they originally drafted him to be. This is his moment—and it's time to see if he can seize it.
