Newly promoted Coventry City are setting their sights high with an ambitious move for Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount, according to the latest reports.

The Sky Blues are back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, and they're not messing around. Under the guidance of Frank Lampard, Coventry stormed to the Championship title with a commanding 11-point cushion over second-place Ipswich Town. With just seven losses in 46 games, they scored the most goals and conceded the fewest—a recipe for the kind of stylish, winning football that gets fans buzzing.

This is a huge moment for the Midlands club, which was a founding member of the Premier League back in 1992-93. But history shows that promotion is only half the battle. The last two seasons saw all three promoted sides tumble straight back down to the Championship. Coventry will be looking to follow the path of Sunderland and Leeds United, the only teams in recent years to come up and survive.

What made Sunderland and Leeds successful? Smart recruitment. Sunderland brought in 18 new faces, Leeds signed 11, and key additions like Granit Xhaka and Dominic Calvert-Lewin proved to be some of the best business in the league. For Coventry, the next three months in the boardroom could be just as important as anything that happens on the pitch next season.

Enter Mason Mount. TEAMtalk reports that Lampard's side is "weighing up an ambitious move" for the 27-year-old midfielder, who the manager knows well from their time together at Chelsea and Derby County. Lampard has previously called Mount a "top player," and the connection could be the key to luring him away from Old Trafford.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are reportedly "open to parting ways" with Mount this summer. His £55 million move from Chelsea in 2023 hasn't gone as planned. Injuries have been a persistent problem, and even when he's been fit, the decisive performances that made him a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge have been few and far between. The appointment of Michael Carrick as manager hasn't helped his cause either, especially since Ruben Amorim was a big admirer of Mount's versatility.

For Coventry, this would be a statement signing—the kind that tells the league they're not just here to make up the numbers. And for Mount, it could be the fresh start he needs to rediscover his best form.
