Finding a franchise quarterback is the ultimate puzzle for any NFL team, and the New Orleans Saints may have finally solved it. The 2025 season's brightest spot was the immediate and potent connection between rookie quarterback Tyler Shough and head coach Kellen Moore, a duo that transformed a stagnant offense into a competitive force almost overnight.
Shough's impact was most evident in how he elevated the play of his teammates, a trait that hasn't gone unnoticed. Former Saints star and respected NFL veteran Tyrann Mathieu recently shared his admiration on his podcast, *In The Bayou with Tyrann Mathieu*.
"I know what you're saying, man, because we was sort of waiting for [Chris] Olave to just get it, right, and even Juwan Johnson, like he's a matchup nightmare," Mathieu said. "So I was really, really happy to see that he got those dudes to play to their potential... once I saw that, I was like 'yo, they might got somebody.'"
Coming from a defensive legend who has faced the league's best, this is significant praise. The stats back up Mathieu's eye test completely. Before Shough's first start in Week 8, receiver Chris Olave averaged about 63 yards per game. From that point on, his average jumped to 80.3 yards, and all three of his 100-yard games came with Shough under center.
Tight end Juwan Johnson saw a similar leap, boosting his per-game average from 45 yards to 57.4 and consistently hitting new highs with Shough delivering the ball. It's clear the rookie quarterback didn't just manage the offense; he unlocked its potential.
With a full offseason to build chemistry, the anticipation for what Shough and this Saints offense can achieve in 2026 is already building. The foundation is set for an exciting new era in New Orleans.
