The Houston Texans made a bold move this offseason by letting punter Tommy Townsend walk in free agency—straight into the arms of division rival Tennessee. Instead of scrambling for a big-name replacement, the front office quietly executed a two-step plan that could pay off big time.
First, they traded a future seventh-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for former South Carolina standout Kai Kroeger. Then, rather than reaching for a punter in the draft, they waited and snagged Syracuse's Jack Stonehouse—a rookie who's already turning heads.
And here's the kicker (pun intended): Stonehouse isn't just a training camp body. He's getting a real shot to compete for the starting job.
"For Jack, we saw a guy that's very consistent," Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said earlier this month. "He has a very strong leg. He does a great job of booting the ball. You can hear the ball coming off his foot."
That kind of praise from a head coach is rare for a rookie specialist. But Stonehouse earned it. A former All-ACC first-team punter, he averaged a school-record 47.1 yards per punt at Syracuse—a mark that ranked in the top five among all FBS punters. Over four seasons with the Orange, he set the program's career record with a 45.8-yard average.
Of course, Kroeger isn't about to hand over the job. He won the starting role last season and averaged 44.8 yards per punt, with 18 of his 28 punts landing inside the opponent's 20-yard line. But there's one glaring weakness: blocks. Kroeger had two punts blocked during the regular season—a red flag that could open the door for Stonehouse.
"Having that healthy competition is only going to make that position better," Ryans added. "We've got Kai. He's done it in the league. And now adding Jack is going to be really healthy competition coming through training camp."
The Texans and Stonehouse return to the practice field later this month for voluntary workouts. And while it's early, Houston may have found itself a bargain—two punters for the price of one, with a rookie who might just steal the show.
