The Ada Cougars gave No. 4 Sallisaw everything they could handle in a thrilling best-of-three Class 4A Area Tournament series, pushing the powerhouse Black Diamonds to a winner-take-all third game. But in the end, Sallisaw's depth proved too much as they claimed the area championship with a commanding 12-2 victory on their home turf.
Ada, the No. 13 seed, came out swinging in the opener, stunning the heavily favored Black Diamonds with a 4-1 win. The Cougars' pitching staff set the tone early, and the offense delivered just enough to secure the upset. But Sallisaw, now 30-2 on the season, showed why they're a top contender, bouncing back in Game 2 with a tight 3-1 victory to force the decisive rubber match.
The series finale started as a pitcher's duel, with Ada's Braden McGilbray and Brock Boyles drawing back-to-back walks to ignite a rally. McGilbray scored on a Kyler Gaddis groundout, and Eli Justus followed with an RBI double, cutting Sallisaw's lead to 4-2. But the Black Diamonds responded with an explosive eight-run fourth inning, highlighted by Carson Sharp's grand slam that put the game out of reach.
Justus and Reece Klaus were bright spots for Ada, both going 2-for-2 and accounting for all four of the Cougars' hits. On the other side, Sallisaw's Easton Wolfe was unstoppable, going 3-for-3 with a triple, double, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Sharp finished 2-for-3 with two runs and that game-breaking grand slam.
Ada struck first in the bottom of the sixth of Game 1, breaking a scoreless tie with three consecutive hits—a leadoff double from Reece Klaus, a bunt single by Rhett Klaus, and an RBI single from Brayden McGilbray. With a 1-0 lead and just two outs away from the area title, the Cougars looked poised to pull off the upset. But Sallisaw rallied in the top of the seventh, using run-scoring doubles from the bottom of their lineup to steal the win.
The series also featured exceptional pitching. In Game 2, Ada's Brock Boyles (8-3) delivered a complete-game effort with five strikeouts and just three earned runs. Sallisaw's Rylan Eagle matched him pitch for pitch, going the distance with four strikeouts and only one run allowed. In the opener, Ada's Chalin Robertson (8-3) was equally impressive, tossing a complete game with five strikeouts and just one earned run to keep the Cougars alive.
Brock Boyles provided the offensive spark in Game 2, breaking a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer in the fifth inning—his third of the season—to put Ada ahead 3-1. Collin Christian added an insurance run in the sixth on a Rhett Klaus sacrifice fly, but it wasn't enough to hold off Sallisaw's late surge.
Shane Coker's Cougars finished their season at 21-15, a campaign defined by grit and a never-say-die attitude. For Sallisaw, the area title propels them into the Class 4A State Tournament with a 30-2 record and a target on their backs. As the dust settles on this thrilling series, one thing is clear: Ada proved they can hang with the best, and that's a lesson every athlete can take to the diamond.
