Tuesday was a banner day for high school golf across New Mexico, with state champions emerging from both ends of the I-25 corridor—and one eighth-grader stealing the show with a performance for the ages.

In Elephant Butte, Cottonwood Classical Prep's Ariana Williams didn't just win the Class 1A-3A state title—she obliterated the competition. The eighth-grader shot rounds of 79 and 76 at Turtleback Mountain Golf and Resort, finishing at 155 and leaving the field in her dust with an astonishing 19-shot victory over runner-up Payton Woolf of Robertson.

"I never really imagined it," Williams said. "After Day 1 … I knew I had this opportunity to win it, but I just didn't realize I'd win by 19 shots. If you had told me that before the first day, I'd be like, 'that's crazy.'"

Meanwhile, down the road in Socorro, Albuquerque Academy turned in a dominant showing at the Class 4A state tournament hosted by New Mexico Tech. The Chargers' girls cruised to the team title, outpacing runner-up Lovington by a whopping 47 shots (667-714), with St. Pius claiming third.

Academy also produced both individual champions. Freshman Thomas Whitten won the boys' crown in the tightest finish of the day, navigating a back nine where four players were tied for the lead at 5-over. Whitten birdied the par-5 16th with a deft chip and short putt to reach 4-over, then held on for a one-shot victory over Artesia's Beau Byers.

"It was very tight," Whitten said. "I like these moments. It's always fun playing in high pressure moments, making something happen." Whitten credited his short game for bailing him out repeatedly on the back nine, adding, "It's just an amazing feeling. I can't be any more proud of myself. It was a mental battle out there, and it was very hard."

On the girls' side, junior Adelyn Haas shot 75-81 to win by five strokes over Kirtland Central's Hayden Dan. Haas attributed her success to a relaxed mindset: "You don't play to win, you play to swing free. That was my goal, to have fun and make good memories with the team. Having that freedom really helped me."

Academy's depth was on full display, with Gabby Sanchez finishing fourth and Addison Kiburz fifth to earn all-state honors. The Chargers' boys team finished second to Artesia (623-634), with Los Alamos just three strokes behind in third.

From record-setting margins to clutch performances under pressure, New Mexico's young golfers proved that the future of the sport is in excellent hands—whether they're eighth-graders making history or seasoned veterans rising to the moment.
