Welsh rugby has been dealt a significant blow with the news that fly-half Sam Costelow will miss the remainder of the Scarlets' season following ankle surgery. The 25-year-old now faces a tight race against the clock to be fit for Wales' crucial Nations Championship campaign this July.

Costelow sustained the injury during Wales' narrow Six Nations defeat to Scotland in February, a match where he had earned a recall to the starting lineup and impressed before his unfortunate exit. The setback forced him to miss the final two rounds of the tournament and has now ruled him out of the Scarlets' final four United Rugby Championship (URC) fixtures.

His rehabilitation timeline presents a major challenge for the national team's plans. Wales' summer schedule kicks off with an uncapped clash against the Barbarians at Twickenham on June 27th, followed by the Nations Championship opener against Fiji in Cardiff on July 4th. The squad then faces demanding away tests against Argentina and world champions South Africa.

In a further concern for head coach Steve Tandy, hooker Dewi Lake is also ruled out for the rest of the club season and is a doubt for the summer tour. The fitness of key players like Costelow will be paramount as Wales look to build momentum in the new global competition.
