Longtime Abilene Cooper football head coach Aaron Roan will step away from the sideline to become Abilene ISD's next assistant athletic director.

After two decades of shaping young athletes on the gridiron, longtime Abilene Cooper head football coach Aaron Roan is trading his playbook for a district-wide clipboard. Roan has been named Abilene Independent School District's next assistant athletic director, marking a significant transition from the sidelines to administration.

Roan will step into the role vacated by Lou Mora, who is retiring at the end of the 2025-26 school year. The announcement, first reported by Dave Campbell's Texas Football on Monday morning, sets the stage for Abilene ISD to begin its search for a new head coach at Cooper—a process that rarely looks beyond familiar faces. In fact, the last time the district hired an external candidate for either Abilene High or Cooper was back in 2006, when Mike Spradlin took the reins at Cooper.

Roan's journey with the Cougars began 20 years ago as an assistant coach. He climbed the ranks, serving as defensive coordinator for seven seasons starting in 2011 before being elevated to head coach in July 2018, following Todd Moebes' resignation. Over eight seasons at the helm, Roan compiled a solid 52-40 record and led Cooper to eight consecutive postseason appearances in the 5A UIL Football Playoffs.

The highlight of his tenure came during the 2019 season, when Roan guided the Cougars to an impressive 11-2 finish and a trip to the 5A Division I regional semifinals. That campaign showcased the grit and determination that defined his coaching philosophy—qualities that will serve him well in his new district-wide role.

As Roan prepares to oversee athletic programs across Abilene ISD, the search for his successor at Cooper promises to be one of the most closely watched storylines in Texas high school football. For now, the Cougars' faithful can look back on a legacy of consistency, playoff runs, and a coach who gave two decades of his life to the program.
