NHL forward Connor McDavid’s brief answers after Game 4 did little to calm concerns around his health. The Edmonton Oilers slipped to a 4-3 overtime loss against the Anaheim Ducks.

The defeat pushed Edmonton to a 3-1 series deficit and left their captain facing mounting pressure ahead of Game 5. The Oilers’ won game 1 but since they have lost three stright.

Speaking to reporters, Connor McDavid avoided giving clarity on his condition. When asked directly about his state of health, McDavid dodged it and replied, “Yeah, I feel we’re all doing the best we can out there. We’re all working, and we’re all trying to get it done.”

McDavid still contributed on the ice, recording two power-play assists and three shots on goal. He now has four points across two games in Anaheim, but both ended in losses. Through four playoff games, he has 13 shots, five hits, and a minus-6 rating. The numbers show involvement, yet not full control of the series.

The concern links back to earlier setbacks. McDavid rolled his ankle in Game 2 but finished the night. Before Game 4, he and Leon Draisaitl missed practice, labeled as maintenance days by coach Kris Knoblauch. Back in March, McDavid also admitted to dealing with hip and groin issues.

“Just hips & groin stuff. Yup, all good,” McDavid said back in March after a maintenance day.

Game 4 itself added to the frustration. Ryan Poehling scored the overtime winner, a messy play that McDavid described bluntly when asked about it.

“Not exactly an oil painting of a goal, but it’s playoff time, and you throw pucks there, and sometimes you get rewarded, and they obviously were tonight,” McDavid said.

The Oilers had a 2-0 lead after the first period, but they lost it in the second. The Ducks erased multiple deficits, with Jeffrey Viel tying the game late in regulation. Despite a strong outing from goaltender Tristan Jarry, Edmonton could not hold on.

Now trailing in the series, the Oilers need more from their captain. McDavid has shown flashes, but his silence off the ice is drawing as much attention as his play.

Game 5 will test both his fitness and leadership as Edmonton fights to stay alive.
