Cooper Connolly smashed his maiden T20 century, but it wasn't enough to stop the Sunrisers Hyderabad from handing the Punjab Kings a third straight loss—and knocking them off the top of the Indian Premier League standings.
The 22-year-old Australian was in scintillating form, finishing unbeaten on 107 off just 59 balls. Yet despite his heroics, Punjab fell 33 runs short while chasing a mammoth 236 in Hyderabad.
Sunrisers made the most of several dropped catches to post a daunting 235-4 on yet another batting-friendly surface. Their explosive opening duo, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, set the tone with a rapid 54-run stand in just 21 balls.
After Abhishek departed for 35 and Head for 36, Ishan Kishan kept the momentum going with a brisk 55 from 32 deliveries. South African star Heinrich Klaasen then piled on 69 off 43 balls, leapfrogging Abhishek to claim the top spot in the tournament's run-scoring charts.
Punjab's chase got off to a nightmare start. Priyansh Arya was caught for just one off the bowling of Sunrisers and Australia captain Pat Cummins in the very first over. Prabhsimran Singh followed for three in the second over, and skipper Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for five in the fourth.
That left Connolly to fight a lone battle. The left-hander smashed seven fours and eight sixes in a stunning knock, but the visitors never truly threatened the target.
The Kings, coached by Australian legend Ricky Ponting, had been unbeaten through their first seven matches this season. They topped the league phase last year before falling in the final, but now find themselves a point behind the new leaders, Sunrisers Hyderabad.
With just two points separating the top five teams in the standings—and Chennai Super Kings sitting two points further back in sixth—the race for playoff spots is heating up nicely.
