The Hershey community is mourning the loss of one of its own—Joe Senser, a 1974 Milton Hershey School graduate and former NFL Pro-Bowler, who passed away Thursday at the age of 69.

Senser’s journey from the halls of Milton Hershey School to the bright lights of the NFL is a story of determination and heart. Drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 1979, he quickly made his mark, earning a Pro-Bowl selection just two years later. But for those who knew him, his legacy extended far beyond the gridiron.

“Joe never forgot the impact MHS had on his life,” said Milton Hershey School President Peter G. Gurt. “He believed deeply in the power of this School to change lives, and he gave back with gratitude, humility, and a strong sense of responsibility to the students who followed in his footsteps.” Beyond his athletic achievements, Senser served on the school’s Board of Managers and the Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Co. Board of Directors, embodying the spirit of community and service.

The Minnesota Vikings organization also paid tribute, with owners Mark and Zygi Wilf highlighting his generosity. “Joe was a generous soul with countless charitable endeavors,” they shared. “He brought his positive personality to every interaction, whether with former teammates, staff, or our family. His warmth and welcoming spirit will last in the memories of those who knew him.”

Inducted into the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame in 2015, Senser’s impact on and off the field serves as a powerful reminder that true champions are measured by the lives they touch. As we remember his contributions, we’re inspired to carry forward his legacy of giving back—a lesson that resonates whether you’re stepping onto the field or into your community.
