The Washington Commanders' secondary struggled mightily in the 2025-26 season, allowing opposing offenses to push the ball downfield with alarming ease. The result? A defensive unit that forced the team's offense to operate at an unsustainable, near-superhuman level just to keep games competitive. But a solution may be on the horizon.

NFL journalist David Harrison of WUSA9 recently suggested that a familiar face could be the key to shoring up Washington's defensive backfield: former Dallas Cowboys star cornerback Trevon Diggs. With a career that once earned him a massive $97 million contract, Diggs is now a free agent—and Harrison believes he could be the perfect fit for the Commanders.

"Trevon Diggs brings elite upside and massive questions to the secondary," Harrison wrote. "While Peters added several new young players to his roster over the draft weekend, he did not spend any of his six picks on a defensive back, leaving Trey Amos, Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, and Ahkello Witherspoon as the four cornerbacks likely to make the team's 53-man roster."

At just 27 years old, Diggs is no stranger to Commanders head coach Dan Quinn, having played under him during their shared tenure in Dallas. Diggs' aggressive, press-man style and relentless pursuit of the football made him one of the league's premier cornerbacks in the early 2020s. His 11-interception season in 2021 remains one of the most remarkable individual defensive achievements in recent memory.

While Diggs' performance has dipped since that career-defining campaign, his elite instincts and ball-hawking skills are undeniable. For a Commanders team that desperately needs a playmaker in the secondary, a low-risk, one-year deal could be a savvy move. Until then, Diggs remains one of the most intriguing cornerback free agents on the market—and a potential game-changer for a Washington defense in need of a spark.
