The Washington Commanders have been searching all offseason for a wide receiver who can take some heat off star Terry McLaurin. They made a move in the draft, grabbing Antonio Williams in the third round, but he's more of a rotational piece than a true difference-maker. What they really need is a player who forces defenses to think twice before double-teaming McLaurin.

There's been plenty of buzz about Brandon Aiyuk potentially landing in Washington if the 49ers let him go, but with minicamp fast approaching, that deal hasn't materialized. Enter Stefon Diggs—a name that's been linked to the Commanders for weeks now. Pro Football Focus recently named Washington the "ideal" landing spot for the veteran free agent, and it's easy to see why.

The Commanders' receiving corps was quietly one of the most concerning in the league heading into the draft. Even after adding Williams, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels needs more reliable weapons. Diggs, despite being released by the Patriots just one year into a lucrative contract, proved he's still got it in 2025. He ranked 10th among qualified receivers in PFF receiving grade (82.6) and yards per route run (2.08), while dropping just 2.9% of his targets. At 32, he was an anchor for New England's passing attack—not the reason for his release.

Diggs would be joining his fourth team in four years, but his on-field consistency is undeniable. He's posted a receiving grade of at least 77.6 in every season of his 11-year career. With Terry McLaurin and Luke McCaffrey both playing under 500 snaps last season, Daniels would benefit from Diggs' ability to line up both inside and outside. That versatility could be exactly what Washington's beleaguered group needs to take the next step.

Of course, there's a reason Diggs keeps changing teams. While his performance has never been the issue, his off-field history has raised red flags. Over the last five years, he's been involved in two separate legal incidents—one with a former girlfriend and another with his former private chef. The situation with his ex-girlfriend is still ongoing in civil court. For a Commanders team looking to build a winning culture, that's a risk they'll have to weigh carefully.
