Sonny Styles with the perfect answer on why he chose No. 52.

When the Washington Commanders unveiled jersey numbers for their 2026 draft class, all eyes were on first-round pick Sonny Styles. The linebacker, selected seventh overall, had worn No. 6 at Ohio State before switching to the "Block 0" in 2025. But with cornerback Mike Sainristil already claiming No. 0 in Washington, Styles needed a new look.

His choice? A classic linebacker number: 52. And the story behind it is as unique as it gets.

"I'm not really a big number guy," Styles admitted during Friday's rookie minicamp. "I wasn't really big into single digits. I like zero. Mikey has zero."

So what inspired the switch? A glance at the Commanders' training facility walls. "I was telling Coach Norton, when I look in the room, you got London Fletcher on the wall, LaVar Arrington, Ken Harvey, Monte Coleman. It was all 50 numbers, and I was like, 'Shoot, I'm going to pick a 50 number.'"

That nod to Washington's linebacker legacy sealed the deal—but the final digit came from childhood heroes. "I remember growing up watching Patrick Willis, Ray Lewis. I was like, 'Hey, 52 would be cool.'"

Then his dad added the perfect touch. "He said, 'Hey, five plus two is seven, so that's your draft pick.' I was like, dang, that's cool. That seems pretty cool. So, that's really how I landed on it. I didn't have no special number to pick, so I was kind of just picking anything."

For fans looking to rep the new linebacker's look, a No. 52 Commanders jersey is more than just apparel—it's a tribute to franchise history, NFL legends, and a rookie's clever connection to his draft slot. Whether you're hitting the gym or game day, that number carries weight.
