The Washington Commanders landed their most exciting prospect of the 2026 NFL Draft when Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles fell to them at No. 7 overall. While Styles didn't generate the early buzz of some other defensive prospects, his standout performance at the NFL Combine quickly turned heads. As draft day approached, it became clear that the teams picking ahead of Washington had other priorities—leaving general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn thrilled to watch the versatile safety-turned-linebacker slide right into their lap.
But here's where the story takes an unexpected turn. One of Styles' new teammates didn't form his first impression from game film or practice reps. Instead, Commanders safety Nick Cross got his first look at the future All-Pro through a much more modern lens: EA Sports' College Football '26.
"It's funny, I just texted him five minutes ago to see how he's doing," Cross shared. The connection goes deeper than a video game, though. Former Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau—a former teammate of Cross—asked him to watch out for Styles and help ease the transition from college to the NFL.
When it comes to Styles' actual abilities, Cross doesn't hold back. "He's a great football player. Sideline-to-sideline, his 40 time speaks for itself, and the tape jumps off as well. He's super physical, can play everything." Then, with a grin, he adds the kicker: "You know, I'm a big video game guy. I play with O-State in the NCAA, and he's always catching picks for me, or knocking somebody out. So definitely a great addition."
For Commanders fans, it's a promising sign that Styles is already building chemistry—even if it started on a console. And if his virtual performances are any indication, the real-life production could be something special.
