When Washington Commanders rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams stepped onto the field for his first NFL minicamp, he was sporting a jersey number that immediately sparked conversation. The No. 14 on his back had fans and analysts alike drawing comparisons to Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown—but as it turns out, the story behind the number runs much deeper than that.
Williams, who wore No. 0 during his standout career at Clemson, found that number already taken in Washington by cornerback Mike Sainristil. That left the rookie looking for a new identity on the field. While many assumed he chose No. 14 as a nod to St. Brown—especially given new offensive coordinator David Blough's plans to implement a Lions-style scheme—Williams had a completely different reason in mind.
"One, four. That was my first number ever, so take it back," Williams explained after Washington's first rookie minicamp practice. "I got a lot of great memories in this number, and hopefully I can make a lot more great memories in this number."
To prove his point, Williams dug up a childhood photo of himself wearing the same No. 14 jersey, posting it on Instagram with the caption "We back." The image shows a young Williams—long before college stardom or NFL dreams—already rocking the digits that now represent his professional debut.
While the number choice may not be about St. Brown, the on-field comparisons are hard to ignore. Williams' college film shows a similar skill set to the Lions' All-Pro receiver: crisp routes, reliable hands, and the kind of savvy that makes defensive coordinators lose sleep. The Commanders are certainly hoping those parallels translate into production on game day.
For now, Williams is focused on building new memories in an old favorite number. And if his childhood photos are any indication, No. 14 has been part of his journey long before the NFL ever came calling.
