‘Come up, come ready’: GM’s message to Mammoth prospects

A number of Mammoth prospects will push for roster spots at training camp this fall.

The message from Utah Mammoth General Manager Bill Armstrong to his team's rising stars is clear: Come ready to compete.

After years of strategic rebuilding—long before the franchise's move to Utah—the Mammoth now boast one of the deepest prospect pools in the NHL. Through a series of savvy trades and early-decade draft picks, GM Armstrong and his staff have assembled a roster of promising talent that could challenge for lineup spots as early as this fall's training camp.

In his recent exit interview, Armstrong emphasized that while he hasn't finalized specific offseason needs, he sees significant potential in the organization's pipeline. "We want to encourage our prospects to come in and try to make our club," he said. "You never want to take a dream away from a prospect—and you don't know. Sometimes, they can just show up and earn their way in."

But the GM made one thing crystal clear: nothing will be handed out. "They've got to come in and take somebody's job," Armstrong stated firmly. "They've got to show up in the best shape and earn the right to take that job. It's going to be competitive—and I like that."

This isn't just talk. The Mammoth have a storied history of underdogs defying the odds. Take current forward Liam O'Brien: undrafted at age 20, he earned a development camp invite from the Washington Capitals in 2014, impressed enough to secure a training camp spot, and eventually signed an NHL contract. After splitting seasons between the NHL and AHL with multiple organizations, he carved out a permanent role with the Arizona Coyotes and now Utah.

While stories like O'Brien's are rare, the Mammoth's prospect cupboard is anything but ordinary. With six first-round picks in their system and several other highly regarded young players, the organization is poised for a training camp battle that could reshape the roster. For these prospects, the message is simple: show up ready, seize the opportunity, and make a name for yourself.
