It's time we had an honest conversation about Real Madrid. While all eyes should be on Atletico Madrid's Champions League semifinal push, the drama unfolding behind the scenes at the Bernabeu demands our attention. The histrionics have spilled into the open, and pretending otherwise does a disservice to the beautiful game.

Even as Barcelona tightened their grip on the La Liga title with a hard-fought win at Osasuna on Saturday, my focus drifted to Real Madrid's visit to relegation-threatened Espanyol the following night. Espanyol's winless run has now stretched to 17 games—the entirety of 2026—but Madrid still looked vulnerable. Vinicius Junior came to the rescue with a well-taken brace, securing a deserved yet slightly uncomfortable 2-0 victory at RCDE Stadium. It staved off Barcelona's title celebrations for at least another week.

Vinicius's heroics feel especially significant given the turmoil swirling around the Madrid dressing room. The noise has only grown louder since Los Blancos crashed out of the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage against Bayern Munich—a second consecutive early exit that ended their last realistic shot at silverware this season. For a club addicted to titles, the prospect of back-to-back trophy-less campaigns is unthinkable.

Enter Kylian Mbappe. The French superstar, who has been managing a troublesome knee injury for most of the season, was spotted on vacation in Italy with his girlfriend, actress Ester Exposito. The optics couldn't be worse. While Vinicius, Jude Bellingham, and Fede Valverde are grinding through La Liga's title race, Mbappe's disconnect has sparked a full-blown PR nightmare.

Interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa didn't hold back. "Every player does what they want in their free time, but we didn't build Real Madrid with players who go out dressed in tuxedos," he said, his words carrying the weight of a warning. "Real Madrid was built with players whose shirts end up covered in mud, sweat and effort."

It's been a tumultuous season at the Bernabeu—one that reminds us that even the world's biggest clubs aren't immune to the drama that makes football so compelling. For fans and fashion enthusiasts alike, the lesson is clear: true champions earn their stripes on the pitch, not on vacation.
