The Indianapolis Colts' revamped secondary is already generating some serious buzz, and veteran safety Cam Bynum is leading the excitement. With a fresh defensive scheme under new coordinator Lou Anarumo, Bynum is particularly eager to line up alongside rookie third-round pick A.J. Haulcy—a move that could transform the backend of the Colts' defense.

Bynum recently shared his thoughts on the rookie's arrival, noting how Haulcy's versatility opens up new possibilities. "A.J.’s skill set makes it a little easier for us," Bynum said. "For me to be in the box sometimes, for him to be in the box. He can play really well in the field." The veteran added that last season, he was typically the one in coverage, but with Haulcy's range, the adjustments have been surprisingly smooth. "It was kind of easy to pick up," Bynum admitted.

Haulcy, a former First-Team All-SEC safety from LSU, arrives in Indianapolis with a resume that screams "day-one starter." During his final college season, he logged 88 tackles (49 solo), three interceptions, four passes defensed, and a forced fumble across 12 starts. His ability to be both a punishing enforcer against the run and a ballhawk in coverage gives the Colts a dynamic weapon they've been craving.

Earlier this offseason, many assumed returning safety Hunter Wohler—who missed his entire rookie campaign due to a Lisfranc injury but impressed during training camp—would be the frontrunner for the starting job. However, Haulcy's arrival has shifted the conversation. With training camp and preseason on the horizon, the rookie now appears to be the early favorite to lock down a starting role.

This move also signals a shift in philosophy for the Colts. The team showed little resistance when starting safety Nick Cross departed in free agency to the Washington Commanders on a modest deal. Cross was a capable in-the-box defender, but the Colts seem to have been searching for a more well-rounded safety to fill that void—someone who can excel both near the line of scrimmage and in deep coverage.

Haulcy, alongside fellow rookie CJ Allen, brings that "SEC dawg" mentality to Indy. While it's far too early to compare him to all-time greats, his playing style draws some intriguing parallels to former Green Bay Packers legend LeRoy Butler—a safety known for his versatility, toughness, and playmaking ability. If Haulcy can channel even a fraction of that impact, the Colts' secondary could be in for a major upgrade.
