The Indianapolis Colts are adding another familiar face to their secondary, this time reaching into the past to secure a potential future contributor. In a move that echoes the team's previous signing of quarterback Philip Rivers, the Colts have brought veteran safety Nasir Adderley out of retirement to bolster their defensive backfield.
After spending the last three seasons away from the game, the 28-year-old Adderley has inked a deal with Indianapolis. A former second-round pick for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019, Adderley brings a proven track record of production. Over 50 career games, he amassed 232 tackles, three interceptions, and 12 passes defensed, showcasing the ball-hawking ability that made him a coveted prospect.
This signing addresses a clear need for the Colts, who saw safety Nick Cross depart in free agency. While the projected starters are Cam Bynum and second-year player Hunter Wohler, Adderley's experience provides crucial competition and depth. If he can recapture the form that earned him a solid PFF grade of +62.2 in his last active season (2022), he could challenge for significant playing time in a revamped secondary.
Adderley isn't the only new addition to the safety room, as the Colts also signed Juanyeh Thomas and special teams ace Jonathan Owens earlier this offseason. This flurry of activity signals a clear intent to solidify the back end of the defense, giving the coaching staff multiple experienced options to pair with their young talent as they prepare for the upcoming season.
