The Indianapolis Colts made a statement last offseason by investing heavily in their secondary, and safety Cam Bynum was at the center of that plan. Signing a lucrative deal, Bynum delivered in a big way—posting career highs in interceptions (four) and tackles for loss (three), while also adding a forced fumble, a recovery, and eight pass breakups. It was the kind of season that makes a defense dangerous.
But even with Bynum locking down the back end, the Colts knew they needed one more piece: a strong safety to pair with their star. Enter A.J. Haulcy, the LSU product selected in the third round of the draft. And if you ask Bynum, the fit couldn't be more perfect.
"Ball hawk. For sure, one of those safeties that's going to set the tone," Bynum said of Haulcy. "I think 10 interceptions over the course of his career. That's a lot. So, I know he's going to get the ball, and that's something that I enjoy doing also. I think us playing together and just with this whole defense, I think he'll fit in really well and be a tone-setter. That's what I've seen from the highlights I've watched."
Bynum even shared that Haulcy reached out recently, and the veteran responded with a simple message: "I told him I'm excited to get to work with him, and I know he's excited to be here."
On paper, Bynum and Haulcy fit the traditional free safety and strong safety roles. But Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has bigger plans. He wants two versatile playmakers who can handle multiple responsibilities without leaving the field—players with the smarts, size, speed, and strength to adapt on the fly.
"Yeah, I think we'll see how it goes. I think that Cam has the ability to do a number of different things. Hopefully, A.J. does as well," Anarumo said after the draft. "So we've just got to see—kind of get around them, find out about them a little bit more. But excited to see what both those guys paired together will be able to do."
With two safeties who thrive on taking the ball away, the Colts' secondary is shaping up to be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. And for fans of the game—or anyone who loves a defense that plays with an edge—this is a pairing worth watching.
