When Cadillac entered Formula 1, the goal was clear: build a team from scratch and compete. But in the fast-paced world of motorsport, patience is a luxury—and now, a major driver shake-up could be on the horizon. Colton Herta, the young American racing prodigy, has made the switch to Formula 2, and his sights are set firmly on a Cadillac F1 seat. That means one of the team's current drivers may soon be packing their bags.
Cadillac currently sits at the back of the grid, and that's no surprise. Building a competitive F1 team from the ground up takes time, money, and the right talent. To steady the ship, the team brought in two seasoned veterans: Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Both drivers are experienced, both are providing crucial feedback, and both are stuck in a car that's still a long way from the front. But in Formula 1, experience doesn't always guarantee job security.
Enter Colton Herta. For years, the IndyCar standout has been the "next big thing" in American open-wheel racing. He nearly joined Red Bull's junior program, but a lack of superlicense points kept him out. Now, with Cadillac's backing—and a fresh start in Formula 2—Herta is finally in position to make the leap to F1. The buzz is real, and it's getting louder.
According to motorsport journalist Julianne Cerasoli, the writing may be on the wall for one of the current Cadillac drivers. "Ferrari has two teams on the grid: one is Haas, the other is Cadillac," Cerasoli reported. "It turns out that Cadillac has a certain Colton Herta who’s already been talking about being a driver next year. And they, being a new team, aren’t going to swap two drivers and put in two inexperienced drivers."
The key detail? Perez's contract is reportedly much tougher to break than Bottas's. That makes the Finn the most vulnerable. "There’s a 90% chance that Perez secured the best deal," Cerasoli added, hinting that Bottas could be the one to make way for the rising American star.
For Cadillac, the move makes sense. Herta represents the future—a young, marketable American talent who can help grow the team's fanbase and bring fresh energy. But for Bottas, a veteran with multiple race wins and years of top-tier experience, it would be a tough exit. As the F2 season unfolds, all eyes will be on Herta's performance—and on who might be handing over the keys to their seat.
