The Chicago Bears have an impressive head coach in Ben Johnson. They must trust his opinion when making offensive-minded draft picks.

The Chicago Bears did something that not many expected in the 2025 NFL Draft when they selected tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick. With Cole Kmet already in place, along with a solid group of wide receivers, they made the decision to bring in another pass catcher.

This pick was confusing to most, other than the fact that it was obviously a Ben Johnson-influenced pick. He was an offensive-minded head coach coming into his first year, and he wanted to bring in Loveland for his new offense.

While it took him a little bit to get going his rookie season, Loveland was one of the best offensive rookies in the NFL. In 16 games, he totaled 58 catches for 713 yards and six touchdowns. He also led Chicago in receptions, receiving yards and tied for most touchdown receptions.

Mandatory Credit: Raj Mehta-USA TODAY SportsComing into 2026, it won’t be shocking if Loveland is the most targeted receiver on the team. Playing opposite Kmet, a completely different type of tight end, they form a dynamic duo.

What sticks out about Loveland is his special ability to make plays once the ball is in his hands. There were a few moments during the 2025 season when he was the savior of the drive because of a big play he made. His speed, agility, and mismatch frame when going for catches will make him a valuable asset for a long time. There is a universe where he is the best tight end in the NFL, but that type of praise will only come with more development.

More than anything else, Loveland is proof that any Ben Johnson-influenced picks must be trusted. It is unlikely they draft another tight end, but don’t be shocked if at least one pick is used on an offensive skill player.

Chicago has significant needs elsewhere on the roster, so it won’t always make sense, but Johnson must be trusted at this stage. If he wants an offensive talent, that likely means his scouting determined it was a good idea. Outside of anything Johnson believes he needs, the trenches are the most important for the Bears. In particular, defensive tackle, edge rusher, left tackle and center would make the most sense with most picks.
