Colorado State men's basketball is bidding farewell to assistant coach Ken DeWeese, who is stepping into a major new role. DeWeese has been named the new head coach of the Colorado Mesa men's basketball program, marking a significant career move from assistant to the top seat.
DeWeese joined the Rams' staff in 2024, working under former head coach Niko Medved and remaining with the program during the transition to Ali Farokhmanesh. His coaching journey through the region includes previous stops at Wyoming and Northern Colorado, giving him deep roots in Colorado basketball.
For DeWeese, the chance to lead the Mavericks was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. "CMU has always been a program on my radar," he said in a statement. "The pride of the University and the longstanding success of the men's basketball program... made the opportunity an easy choice to pursue."
He takes over a Colorado Mesa team that is coming off a strong 21-11 season and an appearance in the Division II NCAA Tournament. The position opened after head coach Mike Dunlap stepped down following the 2025-26 campaign, leaving DeWeese with a competitive foundation to build upon.
While CSU will now look to fill a spot on Farokhmanesh's staff, DeWeese's move highlights the career progression within the coaching ranks and sets up an intriguing new chapter for both programs in the Colorado basketball landscape.
