The Colorado Buffaloes have once again struck out on top in-state talent, but don't hit the panic button just yet—this might actually be part of a bigger game plan.

In the latest recruiting cycle, the Buffs missed out on two of Colorado's top 2027 prospects: three-star wide receiver Jackson Coleman and interior offensive lineman Reis Russell. Both players, who are teammates at Valor Christian High School, announced commitments elsewhere—Coleman to Notre Dame and Russell to Washington. While they each held offers from Coach Prime's program, the Buffs never truly prioritized them, despite public statements about strengthening ties with local talent.

It's worth noting that Valor Christian is coached by Mike Sanford, the former Colorado interim head coach who led the Buffs through their tough 1-11 season in 2022. Sanford recently attended Colorado's high school coaching summit, a clear sign that the program is working to rebuild those relationships. But rebuilding trust and landing top recruits are two different things.

So why is it okay that Colorado missed out? The answer lies in the program's roster-building philosophy under Deion Sanders. Coach Prime and his staff are focused on high school recruits who can contribute immediately. With the transfer portal bringing in starting-caliber wide receivers and offensive linemen, players like Coleman and Russell—who would need time to develop—simply didn't fit the 2026 roster needs.

This approach is bold, but it's intentional. Colorado is betting on talent that can make an impact in Year 1, not projects for the future. For fans worried about the in-state drought, remember: the Buffs are playing a different game, and sometimes missing on a recruit is part of winning the long-term strategy.
