DENVER — The Colorado Avalanche proved that defense wins championships—or at least playoff games—as they took a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Minnesota Wild with a gritty 5-2 victory in Game 2 at Ball Arena.
Known for their explosive offense, the Avalanche flipped the script on Tuesday night, leaning on stellar goaltending and disciplined defensive play to frustrate the Wild. The win sends the series to Minnesota for Game 3 on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT, leaving the Wild with a steep climb back into contention.
Colorado wasted no time setting the tone, scoring on their first two shots of the game and their first shot of the second period. Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson, who got the start in net, made 18 saves but couldn't stop the early barrage. Minnesota's Marcus Johansson and Kirill Kaprizov provided the only offense for the visitors, while Colorado's Scott Wedgewood stood tall with 29 saves.
The Wild showed resilience early, with Kaprizov scoring just six seconds after Colorado's opening goal. Ryan Hartman's pass sprung Kaprizov in alone from the blue line, and his wrist shot found the back of the net for his third goal of the playoffs and first of the series. But the Avalanche answered on their first power play, with Gabriel Landeskog left wide open to make it 2-1.
Colorado extended their lead to 3-1 on the first shot of the second period, a routine-looking blast that somehow beat Gustavsson on the blocker side. The game grew chippy in the third period, with the Avalanche adding another power-play goal to make it 4-1. Johansson answered with his third playoff goal, but an empty-netter with 4.4 seconds left sealed the win.
Defensively, the Wild made a lineup adjustment, swapping veteran Zach Bogosian for Jeff Petry on the third defensive pair. Bogosian had been dealing with a lower-body injury throughout the season. But the move didn't provide the spark Minnesota needed.
For the Avalanche, this win showcased their ability to adapt and win different types of games—a dangerous sign for opponents. As the series shifts to Minnesota, the Wild will need to find answers quickly to avoid falling into an insurmountable hole.
