Twelve years after crowning its first national champion, the CFP is overhauling its look

The College Football Playoff is getting a fresh look. After 12 years of crowning national champions, the CFP is launching a major brand refresh aimed at solving a surprising identity crisis. Despite its high-profile games, a staggering 72% of fans mistakenly believe the NCAA runs the playoff, and only 7% can correctly identify its logo.

To build a clearer, more powerful identity, the organization unveiled a new logo system on Tuesday. The most striking update is the application of "Championship Gold"—a shimmering, metallic gradient added to the iconic football logo. The design has been refined, with thickened bracket strokes and rounded ends that now more closely mirror the actual CFP National Championship Trophy, creating a direct visual link to the ultimate prize.

This rebrand is a deliberate shift toward simplicity and recognition. The lengthy "College Football Playoff" name is being deprioritized in favor of the strong, three-letter "CFP" acronym, which is now integrated directly into most marks. The organization also introduced new, arced wordmarks for every playoff round—from the First Round to the National Championship—and updated its primary font for a more modern feel.

Furthermore, the CFP is strengthening its partnership with the iconic bowl games that host the quarterfinals and semifinals. New "lock-up" logos have been created for the Sugar, Rose, Orange, Cotton, Peach, and Fiesta Bowls, each prominently featuring the "CFP" branding alongside the traditional bowl marks. This move visually unifies the postseason under the CFP banner while honoring each game's storied history.

"Since its inception, the CFP has represented the pinnacle of college football," said CFP Executive Director Rich Clark. "Our refreshed logo system builds on the successes of our first 12 years and positions the brand for continued growth." As the playoff expands and evolves, this new identity aims to ensure that every fan knows exactly who is bringing them the sport's most thrilling games.
