In a fitting tribute to a true giant of the game, the legacy of college football icon Bobby Bowden has reached new heights—literally. The Tallahassee International Airport will be renamed "Bobby Bowden International Airport," a first-of-its-kind honor for a college football coach that ensures his name will welcome generations of fans to the city he helped put on the map.
The renaming, approved in mid-March via bill SB 628, was championed by former Seminole and Florida State Senator Corey Simon, who played under Bowden during their 1999 National Championship season. The announcement came with a classic dose of college football rivalry, as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis quipped that every visiting Florida Gators fan will now have to "fly in to Bobby Bowden International Airport."
Bowden's 34-year tenure at Florida State was nothing short of transformative. He compiled a staggering 316-97-4 record, captured two national titles, and guided the Seminoles to 15 top-10 finishes between 1979 and 2000. Upon his retirement in 2009, he stood as the second-winningest coach in college football history with 346 career victories.
This airport dedication adds to a growing list of tributes for the legendary coach, who passed away in 2021. His name already graces the field at Doak S. Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee and at Samford University, where his coaching career began. It's a permanent reminder that the impact of a great coach extends far beyond the sidelines, shaping the very identity of a community and its sporting spirit.
