As we march toward the College World Series, it's time to break out the bracketology for college baseball. Our weekly NCAA tournament projections are here to keep you in the know, much like our football bowl projections and basketball bracket coverage. If you're new to the "Road to Omaha," here's how it works: 64 teams kick off the tournament in late May, starting with 16 regional double-elimination mini-tournaments. The winners advance to the super regionals, a best-of-three series that narrows the field to eight teams. Those eight head to Omaha for another double-elimination showdown to crown a champion.
Selection is similar to March Madness—29 conference tournament champions earn automatic bids, leaving 35 at-large spots. This year, a seeding change sees a committee ranking the top 32 teams. Seeds 1-16 become regional hosts (1-seeds), while seeds 17-32 get 2-seeds, with the twist that no two teams from the same conference can land in the same region.
Our focus today is on Mountain West and current/future PAC-12 teams. Baseball America's latest Road to Omaha update (May 5th) highlights Oregon State's recent struggles with tough losses, noting their independent status makes them a wild card. Still, the projections feature three teams under our coverage umbrella.
In the Los Angeles Region, San Diego State snags the four-seed and will face USC. Over in Corvallis, Oregon State is the top seed (16th overall), with Gonzaga sliding in as the third seed. CSM's projections are from April 2nd, so no fresh updates there this week.
Air Force earns the nod as the Mountain West champion, holding steady as the four-seed in the Corvallis Regional. It's shaping up to be an exciting ride to Omaha, and we'll keep tracking the action as the season heats up.
