Colin Cowherd isn't shedding any tears over the Boston Celtics' early exit from the playoffs. After a stunning collapse—blowing a 3-1 series lead against the Philadelphia 76ers—the Celtics' season came to an abrupt end. It's the first time since 2021 that Boston failed to make it past the first round, leaving fans in shock and disappointment.
But for Cowherd, the host of "The Herd," it's a welcome break. "Their offense is predictable and boring. It's too many 3-point shots," he said on a recent episode. He also expressed relief that the Golden State Warriors are out, arguing that the NBA's reliance on three-pointers is hurting the game.
"I think it's good for the league. It's like the tush push: It was less effective last year. Good. It's bad television. It's predictable, it's ugly, it's a scrum... The NBA is too 3-point reliant," Cowherd added.
He's not wrong. Over the final three games of the series, Boston missed a barrage of three-pointers, stubbornly sticking to their game plan even as things unraveled. Under head coach Joe Mazzulla, hoisting threes has become a hallmark of the Celtics' offense—but it's not exactly thrilling to watch.
More importantly, it's not paying off in the postseason. With just one playoff series win over the last two seasons combined, it's clear that Boston's strategy needs a serious rethink. For a team with championship aspirations, this early exit should serve as a wake-up call. Whether they'll answer it remains to be seen.
