Manchester United's search for Bruno Fernandes' long-term successor has taken a dramatic turn, with the club reportedly ending their interest in Chelsea's Cole Palmer. The 31-year-old Portuguese maestro has been the heartbeat of the Red Devils since arriving at Old Trafford in January 2020, but with his contract expiring at the end of next season, succession planning has become a priority for the club's hierarchy.

Fernandes is currently on the brink of history, having racked up 19 Premier League assists this season. With just three games remaining, he has the chance to match or break the league record of 20 assists in a single campaign—a record jointly held by legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. He's also only the third player after Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney to register 100 goals and 100 assists for United, cementing his legacy as a modern great.

Despite showing no signs of slowing down, Fernandes' age has forced United to look ahead. INEOS, the club's owners, had reportedly identified Chelsea's Cole Palmer as the ideal candidate to fill those creative boots. Palmer, who rose through the ranks at Manchester City, left the Etihad in the summer of 2023 seeking regular game time. His debut season at Stamford Bridge was nothing short of sensational—27 goals and 15 assists in 48 appearances earned him Chelsea's Player of the Season, Players' Player of the Season, and the Premier League's Young Player of the Season award.

However, Palmer's second campaign hasn't lived up to those sky-high expectations. The 24-year-old has struggled with form and fitness, managing just 10 goals and three assists in 30 appearances across all competitions. Injuries have sidelined him for 26 games for club and country, while the managerial turmoil at Chelsea hasn't helped his consistency. Recent reports suggested Palmer was unsettled in West London and open to a move to Old Trafford this summer.

But according to The Express, United have now pulled the plug on that pursuit. While the reasons remain unclear, the decision marks a significant shift in the club's transfer strategy. For fans dreaming of a Palmer-Fernandes midfield pivot, that vision has now faded. The Red Devils will have to look elsewhere as they plan for life after their talismanic captain.
