Cole Downey has been living out a lifelong dream. The former Calvary Baptist standout and current Loyola assistant coach has been named the new head baseball coach at Northwood, taking over a program that has enjoyed sustained success under recently retired coach Austin Alexander.
Principal Shannon Wall made the announcement Wednesday, signaling a new era for the Falcons. Downey will be joined by Natchitoches Central assistant coach Cade Hart, who will serve as one of his assistants. Both Downey and Hart know what it takes to win at a high level—they each competed on championship teams at Calvary Baptist, bringing a winning pedigree to Blanchard.
"Becoming a head baseball coach has been a dream of mine for a long time, so I'm incredibly thankful and humbled for the opportunity to lead the Northwood program," Downey said. "I truly believe God opens doors and places people where they're supposed to be, and I'm grateful He led me to this opportunity at Northwood. I'm excited to become part of the Blanchard community and invest in the players, school and people around the program."
The Falcons have been a consistent force in District 1-4A, regularly contending for district titles and making deep LHSAA playoff runs under Alexander. Downey inherits a program built on a strong foundation, and his mission is clear: maintain that standard while putting his own stamp on the team. With his championship background and a trusted assistant by his side, Northwood baseball looks poised to keep swinging for the fences.
