Leicestershire County Cricket Club has locked in its winning leadership duo for the long haul, with head coach Alfonso Thomas and assistant coach James Taylor signing contract extensions that will keep them at the helm through the 2028 season.
The news comes just months after the pair masterminded the Foxes' triumphant return to the top flight of English cricket, clinching the Division Two title in style. It's a remarkable turnaround for a club that, not long ago, faced questions about its very future as a first-class county.
Thomas, the 49-year-old South African, and Taylor, a 36-year-old former England batter who began his professional career with Leicestershire, first joined forces as interim coaches in 2023. Their chemistry was immediate: they replaced Paul Nixon and promptly guided the team to One-Day Cup glory that same year. Thomas was confirmed as permanent head coach at season's end, with Taylor staying on as his right-hand man.
"When James and I first stepped into these roles, we spoke about building something the supporters could be proud of—not just in terms of results but in the way the team represents the club every single day," Thomas told the club website. "We've made some fantastic progress together, but there's still a huge amount we want to achieve."
Leicestershire's director of cricket, Claude Henderson, hailed the duo's "massive role" in transforming the club from a side fighting for relevance into a revitalized Division One outfit. Taylor echoed that sentiment, noting that "strong foundations" have been laid and that he and Thomas will "look to keep the club driving forward."
However, the Foxes are still finding their feet back in the top tier. They are yet to win a Division One match this season, sitting second from bottom with just two draws from five games. But with this leadership team locked in for the long term, the building blocks for sustained success are firmly in place.
