A new era is beginning for Essex Women, and it's being led by a familiar face in English cricket. Former Lancashire and England spin bowler Stephen Parry has taken over as head coach, bringing a fresh perspective and a clear mission: to build a more positive and successful future for the squad.
Parry's appointment comes at a pivotal moment. The team is looking to rebound from a challenging 2025 season, where they secured only six victories across 28 matches in the One-Day Cup and T20 Blast. With a three-year contract, the new coach has a solid runway to implement his vision, starting with their season opener against Hampshire this Saturday.
The core of the playing group remains, but Parry has bolstered the support staff, bringing in Nick Browne as a dedicated batting coach to work alongside seam bowling coach Cath Dalton. This focus on specialized coaching underscores a commitment to player development at every level.
Speaking to BBC Essex, Parry highlighted the team's youthful energy as a key asset. "I've always liked the young, vibrant energy the team's got," he said. He acknowledges that with youth can come inconsistency, especially in high-pressure moments, and has identified improving decision-making under pressure as a critical area for growth.
Parry's own credentials are impressive. He earned seven white-ball caps for England and featured in the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. His coaching journey progressed through the Lancashire Women's setup before he sought the challenge of a head coach role, leading him to Essex.
Now, he's focused on unlocking the potential within the squad, captained by Grace Scrivens. "There's definitely more to achieve from this group of players," Parry stated. His philosophy extends beyond the pitch, aiming to elevate the entire environment—players, coaches, and culture alike.
He credits the club's leadership, including Director of Cricket Chris Silverwood and CEO Dan Feist, for their supportive and ambitious vision for growing the women's game. While results are the ultimate measure, Parry believes a strong, accountable, and positive team culture is the foundation for lasting success. As the new season kicks off, the goal is clear: to channel that vibrant energy into consistent, winning performances on the field.
