Some thoughts on the Pittsburgh Penguins playoffs and 2025-26 season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins' 2025-26 season came to a heartbreaking close Wednesday night, falling 1-0 in overtime to the Philadelphia Flyers. It was the kind of loss that stings extra hard—not because the Penguins played poorly, but because they played so well. For most of the game, including the third period and overtime, they were the better team on the ice. For the third straight game in the series, they seemed to be gaining momentum, tilting the ice in their favor. Each night, it felt like a big breakthrough was just around the corner. But in the end, they simply ran out of time.

If this series had gone to a Game 7, you'd have to like their chances. But there will be no Game 7. And honestly, the loss wasn't decided on Wednesday night in Philadelphia. It was decided back in Games 1, 2, and 3—especially those first two games on home ice. Those games count just as much, and in some ways, they count even more. When you dig yourself a 3-0 hole in a playoff series, you leave zero margin for error. You need to be nearly perfect and catch a few breaks along the way. The Penguins made it interesting. They made it dramatic. And there's no faulting the way they battled to close out the series. But you simply can't dig that kind of hole and expect to survive in the postseason.

That said, this ending doesn't erase all the positives from the season. Not every year has to end with a championship or a top draft pick to be meaningful. Sometimes, you can enjoy a fun, unexpected ride and walk away feeling good about it. And this was one heck of a ride—one nobody saw coming when the season began. Outside of that brutal stretch in December when they lost eight straight games and blew some unimaginable leads, this team was consistently awesome. Even that ugly losing streak played a part in the story. The way they bounced back, the way they refused to quit, showed the kind of mindset that defined this team all year long. Nothing phony about it.
