The Los Angeles Clippers just landed Darius Garland earlier this year in a blockbuster deal that sent James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers, marking a clear shift toward a younger backcourt. But after Sunday's NBA Draft Lottery, that plan might already be changing—and fast.
The Clippers didn't expect to have a first-round pick this year. That all changed when Indiana's selection fell out of the top four and landed at No. 5, giving Los Angeles a prime spot thanks to the earlier Ivica Zubac trade. And with that pick, the team now faces a tantalizing dilemma.
This draft class is widely viewed as having a clear top four: AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson. But if that holds true, the fifth pick becomes one of the most intriguing positions in the entire draft—especially for teams in need of a point guard. Suddenly, all of the top floor generals are still on the board, and there's a deep pool to choose from.
ESPN's Tim Bontemps summed it up simply: "The choice should be pretty simple. Choose whichever of the exciting young point guards—Arkansas' Darius Acuff Jr., Louisville's Mikel Brown Jr., Houston's Kingston Flemings, and Illinois' Keaton Wagler—that they like the most."
Among that group, Acuff and Flemings are generally viewed as slightly ahead of Wagler (who lacks elite athleticism) and Brown (who battled back injuries in his lone college season). But all four have a strong case to be considered the top point guard in this class.
For the Clippers, that creates a fascinating crossroads. If they draft one of these rising stars, they'll have to decide what to do with Garland—the very player they just acquired to lead their offense. A quick change of plans might be exactly what's coming in Los Angeles.
