Every season, a new star emerges in high school track and field—and this year, that star is Clinton freshman Wyatt Dehring. Already a league champion in his debut varsity season, Dehring is now setting his sights on regional titles and all-state finishes as one of the top sprinters in Division 3.
Dehring didn't just step onto the varsity scene—he burst onto it. After dominating middle school competition and winning league titles as an eighth grader, the young Redwolf has quickly become one of Michigan's most exciting track and field athletes. At the LCAA conference finals in Hillsdale, he captured championships in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and long jump, proving he's a triple threat on the track.
Heading into this weekend's regional meet at Adrian Madison, Dehring is ranked third in Division 3 in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 11.05 seconds. He's also inside the top 10 in the 200-meter dash at 22.39, and his long jump mark of 21 feet, 6 inches ranks 10th in the state. These performances have already earned him early qualification for the Division 3 state finals at Kent City in the 200 and the 4x100 relay.
"It feels great," Dehring said. "All my hard work and stuff's paid off. I really look at the timings and see what I need to improve on. And I just go hard every day."
His rise has been steady throughout the spring season. He opened with victories in both sprint events at the Clinton Redwolf Invite, running 11.59 in the 100 and 23.00 in the 200. He then lowered his 100 time to 11.21 during an LCAA dual meet before exploding for his state-ranking 11.05 at the Madison and Clinton meet on May 4. In the 200, he set a meet record at the Hinsdale Invitational with his personal best of 22.39.
Now, with regional titles on the line and a deep postseason run within reach for Clinton, all eyes are on this freshman sensation. Whether you're a fan of the Redwolves or just love watching raw talent develop, Wyatt Dehring is a name you'll want to remember—and maybe even wear on your gear this season.
